better serve our deaf and hard of hearing community. The ISD continues to work
with the RI Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to acquire Video Relay
Services (VRS) to round out our technology suite and posted signs in the lobby in
accordance with the Commission’s recommendations.
The accreditation process is best described as ”…the bestowing of credentials
symbolizing approval from a professional organization upon practitioners or
specific institutions. It is a progressive and time proven way of helping
organizations evaluate and improve their overall performance.”
The Cranston Police Department made the commitment to
seek both national accreditation under the Commission of
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Inc.,
and statewide accreditation under the Rhode Island Police
Accreditation Commission (RIPAC).
The department successfully achieved it’s intial CALEA
Advanced Accreditation Award on March 24, 2012, was
recertified by CALEA on March 24, 2015 and received our third award on March
24, 2018. In May of 2019 the agency submitted to, and successfully passed its
first annual CALEA Information Management and Reporting System (CIMRS)
compliance check. These compliance checks will be conducted annually leading
up to the “site-based visit”.
The Cranston Police Department initially received statewide
accreditation with RIPAC in November of 2013 and submitted
to an assessment in November of 2019 seeking a second
RIPAC recertification and third overall certification. Members
of the Inspectional Services Unit are regularly called upon to
act as assessors for the RI Police Accreditation Coaltion
during “mock” as well as actual assessments of police
agencies throughout the state.
In 2019, members of the Inspectional Services Division coordinated with various
vendors and city departments to thoroughly assess and upgrade the
radio/communications infrastructure including receivers/transmitters, dispatch
consoles, antenae etc. Multiple firmware upgrades were applied to all of the
departments portable and mobile radios. The “Radio” garage was networked to
the main Motorola switch as well as the department’s WiFi and
covert video stream routers. Four (4) new video monitors and
dedicated video servers were installed in dispatch. The system
was converted to fiber optic providing better coverage and
higher quality equating to increased saftey for our officers.
