fifty-three. As we enter CY2020, we look to fill the four existing vacancies. As we
enter January 2020, we will hire four officers to fill the existing vacancies, with one
being a transfer and the remaining three attending the police academy. We are
prepared to complete addition background investigations as vacancies occur. The
current hiring eligibility list will expire in October 2021.
Compliance Programs
The Training Division staff continued conducting alcohol and tobacco
compliance/enforcement checks throughout the calendar year. Both programs
are to ensure that businesses that sell alcohol and tobacco products are in
compliance by requesting identification prior to the point of sale and have the
necessary licensing to conduct such sales. Throughout the year, every business
that sells alcohol and/or tobacco will have been checked. The Training Division
staff is assisted in this effort by students from Cranston East and Cranston West
High schools. The students are provided training prior to conducting the
compliance checks and are instructed on how to handle the situation if the
product(s) are sold to them. All students involved with these programs have
parental permission prior to conducting the checks.
Community Programs & Events
The Cranston Police Citizens Police Academy (CPA) remains one of the most
popular community programs conducted by the Training Division. This year there
were eighteen attendees for the ten week course. The course provided attendees
with the insight of what it is like to be a police officer in the City of Cranston.
Attendees are provided instruction in the areas of patrol tactics, interview and
interrogations, crisis negotiations, firearms, vehicle stops and K9. Later in the
course, attendees are put through a series of scenarios to simulate some of the
situations faced by law enforcement. The scenarios are structured so they get an
understanding how an officer’s training and communication skills assist them in
handling volatile situations. Many of the graduating class remark that they have
gained an appreciation for police and the difficult jobs that are done every day.
Complex Improvement & Expansion
A major goal for 2019 was to complete the repairs and renovations from the fire
that occurred on December 21, 2018. This initiative proved to be an extremely
time consuming and detailed task. With damage from the fire consuming the
entire armory and much of the classroom area, the scope of the repairs was vast.
The entire armory had to be gutted and the roof torn down. The classroom
required new walls, ceiling, carpet, and furniture. The offices required repairs to
the walls ceiling and floors. The remainder of the building required new floors,
