In November, the Department’s administration approved the optional use of Angel
Armor uniform carriers to remove weight off the officers’ waist and redistribute it to
their torsos. Since moving the equipment from the belt to the vest was a considerable
change, the Training Division provided a two-hour training to familiarize officers with
techniques and ideas promoting the proper placement and use of each piece of
equipment.
Community Programs & Events
With the COVID restrictions removed, the Citizens Police Academy was held in 2021.
From April to June, 11 classes featuring a variety of law enforcement topics were
attended by 20 people. As with past classes, the attendees approved the class
curriculum and the overall program. Based on their feedback and the support of the
CPD Administration, Training plans to provide a class for 2022.
The Cranston Police Department continued its longstanding partnership with the
Cranston Public School District by teaching the ALICE program in each school building for
the eighth year from October to December. The Training Division organized and scheduled
the sessions throughout the district. The instructors, most of whom are parents, teach the
response options for students, teachers, and staff during a violent intruder incident.
Admittedly, violent intruders and the consequences of their actions are difficult subjects to
discuss. However, each presentation used age-appropriate language and encouraged
dialogue at every age. Once the training was completed, the officers presented the
information districtwide to approximately ten thousand students and staff.
Lastly, the Training Division and CCAP worked together throughout 2021, attempting
to perform tobacco compliance checks. Within the available time, officers from the
Training Division performed limited checks throughout the city and issued two
