The hiring process began with the physical fitness assessment, which consisted of sit-
ups, pushups, a 1.5-mile run, and a 300-meter sprint. Of the four hundred ninety-
three applicants, two hundred forty-nine attended on July 13, 2021, at Cranston High
School West. A variety of COVID protocols were in place. These included rapid testing
of all attendees (no positive cases), staggered start times, limiting group sizes, using
custom-built barriers for sit-ups, mask requirements for all except when participating
in an exercise, cleaning the assessment station after each use through the duration of
the event and multiple hand sanitizer stations at a variety of locations.
One hundred fifty-nine applicants passed all assessment stations and moved on to the
written test, which was given that afternoon in the CHSW cafeteria. Again, COVID
protocols were in place, and these included the use of individual desks separated by
six feet and the use of masks throughout the test. Upon completion and scoring,
seventy-nine applicants passed with a minimum score of seventy and were scheduled
for an initial interview.
