The interviews took place over two days (April 13 & 14, 2021), with members of the

Command Staff as the panel. Of the seventy-nine interviews, sixty-two candidates

passed with the minimum score of seventy.

Following the interviews, a swim test for the top thirty-three was scheduled for April

21, 2021, at the Park View Middle School pool. The applicants must complete

approximately 50% of the police academy swim test standard. Of the thirty-three,

thirty-two passed. Four candidates removed themselves from consideration after the

swim test, making the final list of fifty-eight candidates.

Based on the needs of the Department, fourteen extensive background investigations

were completed for the hiring of six new officers. Regarding the officers who needed to

attend the municipal academy, the Training Division prepared the officer to participate

and was the point of contact throughout the session. For the certified officers coming

from other agencies, the Training Division coordinated equipment and uniform needs.

All hired officers spent three days at Training before being assigned to their primary

field training officer. The new officers were familiar with significant department

policies, mental health and wellness, use of force, de-escalation, firearms, building

search, motor vehicle stops, and Taser. Additionally, Training coordinated the new

officers’ identification pictures, computer access, email assignments, and various

logistics before starting their field training assignment.

                                                         Summary

Overall, the Training Division’s main goal was to provide members of the Cranston

Police with progressive training and equipment to produce officers who are

professional and well-respected in the community. To achieve this, the Training

Division maintained and created new relationships with outside organizations while

seeking education from various professions. By doing so, the Cranston Police

                                                                                                           88
