The interviews took place over two days (April 13 & 14, 2021), with members of the
Command Staff as the panel. Of the seventy-nine interviews, sixty-two candidates
passed with the minimum score of seventy.
Following the interviews, a swim test for the top thirty-three was scheduled for April
21, 2021, at the Park View Middle School pool. The applicants must complete
approximately 50% of the police academy swim test standard. Of the thirty-three,
thirty-two passed. Four candidates removed themselves from consideration after the
swim test, making the final list of fifty-eight candidates.
Based on the needs of the Department, fourteen extensive background investigations
were completed for the hiring of six new officers. Regarding the officers who needed to
attend the municipal academy, the Training Division prepared the officer to participate
and was the point of contact throughout the session. For the certified officers coming
from other agencies, the Training Division coordinated equipment and uniform needs.
All hired officers spent three days at Training before being assigned to their primary
field training officer. The new officers were familiar with significant department
policies, mental health and wellness, use of force, de-escalation, firearms, building
search, motor vehicle stops, and Taser. Additionally, Training coordinated the new
officers’ identification pictures, computer access, email assignments, and various
logistics before starting their field training assignment.
Summary
Overall, the Training Division’s main goal was to provide members of the Cranston
Police with progressive training and equipment to produce officers who are
professional and well-respected in the community. To achieve this, the Training
Division maintained and created new relationships with outside organizations while
seeking education from various professions. By doing so, the Cranston Police
