The Cranston Police Department is committed to maintaining national accreditation
under the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Inc.
and statewide accreditation under the Rhode Island Police Accreditation Commission
(RIPAC).
The department successfully achieved its initial CALEA Advanced Accreditation Award
on March 24, 2012, was recertified by CALEA on March 24, 2015, and received our
third award on March 24, 2018. In November of 2021, the agency submitted to and
successfully passed its four-year site-based assessment. The Cranston Police
Department looks forward to receiving its fourth overall CALEA Accreditation award in
March 2022.
The Cranston Police Department initially received statewide accreditation with RIPAC
in November of 2013 and was awarded its third overall RIPAC certification on March
11, 2021. Members of the Inspectional Services Unit are regularly called upon to act
as assessors for the RI Police Accreditation Coalition during “mock” and actual
assessments of police agencies throughout the state.
RECORDS UNIT / TERMINAL AGENCY COORDINATOR (TAC)
The Records Unit was staffed by two full-time and three part-time civilian personnel in
2021. This unit is primarily responsible for maintaining most of the police
department’s records and providing reports and other requested documents to the
public per the Access to Public Records Act (APRA). The Records Unit is also
responsible for processing firearms purchase applications (2009 in CY 2020), court
subpoenas, collecting games of chance applications/fees, NCIC validations, and
Sexual Offender Records.
