             Uniform Division

The Cranston Police Department Uniform Division is the largest division in the
department staffed by seventy-eight officers. The Uniform Division is the
generally recognized as the face of the Cranston Police Department as the

officers in this division are the first responders that the public sees when they
call for police services. The Division is comprised of three shifts that are
managed by two captains, four lieutenants, twelve sergeants, and sixty-two

patrol officers. The Uniform Division is supported by the Traffic Unit, K-9 Unit,
School Resource Officer Unit, Animal Control Unit and the Communications
Division. The Uniform Division is responsible for patrolling twenty-eight square
miles and protecting the eighty-one thousand residents of the city.

For the second consecutive year the Uniform
             Division fielded over eighty-five thousand
calls for service. Since 2014, the Division has

seen a 30 percent increase in calls for
service. Uniform Division staffing during the
daytime is maintained at high levels so the
             department effectively manage the large

volume of calls and still maintain time for
officers to spend in our elementary schools.
This important initiative continues to allow the

department to have officers spend quality time interacting with the youth of our
city. Officers interact with the students in a positive way during periods outside
the classroom, such as lunch time, recess, or gym class. The initiative has
increased safety in and around all of the elementary schools without creating an

overbearing presence that may distract the students or staff. The partnership
between the police department and school department has been strengthened
by this program and is a small part of the police department’s mission of being

looked upon as being part of the community.

The department achieves its mission of community policing through many
different initiatives. The mountain bike program plays a major role in this

initiative and provides our officers opportunities to spend time outside of their
cruisers, interacting with the citizens and business owners in the city. The bike
