2019 Crime Comparison Report – Criminal Investigations Unit
Note: The number of overall reported incidents is greater than the number of
investigations carried out by the CIU. This is due to unfounded criminal
complaints; determined by other divisions of the Cranston Police Department
prior to Detective assignment or determined after progressing to the CIU but prior
to assignment. However, it is to be construed as an accurate depiction of an
overall crime comparison.
SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT
The Special Victims Unit (SVU) is responsible for the investigation of all offenses
within the City of Cranston that involve domestic violence, sexual offences,
juvenile offenders or victims, vandalisms, missing persons, elderly neglect/abuse,
family court prosecutions and the maintenance of the sexual offender registry. In
order to meet this mission, the SVU is comprised of four detectives, a civilian
domestic violence advocate/law enforcement liaison and is supervised by a
detective sergeant. Additionally, Sergeant Lori Sweeney and Detective Michael
Iacone remain sworn members of the FBI and HIS task forces respectively.
Sergeant Sweeny was sworn in on July 8, 2015. Detective Iacone was sworn in
on May 15, 2015.
The SVU detectives investigated 57 incidents of criminal sexual contact in 2019.
This represents a slight downward trend in the overall number of reported
incidents of sexual crime.
