The Training Division completed eleven comprehensive background investigations
during 2020 to fill existing vacancies. Of the 11, three candidates were sent to the
Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy with only one remaining employed by
the Cranston Police Department as of December 31, 2020. This has allowed the
department to maintain its staffing one-hundred and forty-six. As we enter CY2021,
we look to fill the seven existing vacancies and are prepared to complete addition
background investigations as needed. The current hiring eligibility list will expire in
October 2021.
Community Programs & Events
COVID caused the cancellation of all non-essential events. However, the Training
Division had received forty applicants for the cancelled 2020 Citizens Police Academy.
Since they expressed interest in 2020, they will be the first to be notified for the 2021
Citizens Police Academy.
Compliance Programs
Since the COVID pandemic affected societal movement and business regulations, no
tobacco or alcohol compliance checks were performed in conjunction with the
Cranston Community Action Program (CCAP). However, the Training Division
continued its support of and working with CCAP by consistently speaking with its staff
to determine what measures could be taken once the restrictions are lifted. Due to the
past success of the compliance and enforcement check plan as designed, similar
checks will be used in 2021.
