dispatch issues from high stress calls to working with people who have mental illness
or who are in crisis.
Overall, the Cranston Police Department continues to provide necessary training
opportunities to all members of the agency. By producing informed officers and
dispatchers via professional development, the Department can serve the City more
effectively.
Complex Improvement & Expansion
Many small improvements were made throughout 2020 including range clean up,
target repair, electrical wiring upgrades, gutter clean outs, removal of the obstacle
course, securing the donation of a portable classroom from Cranston Public Schools
and the addition of air purifiers to help mitigate the spread of COVID.
The Cranston Police Training Complex is the largest multipurpose and most versatile
police training facility in Rhode Island that requires continual maintenance and
improvement. In addition to the Cranston Police, the Rhode Island Municipal Police
Academy and other police agencies use the facility on a consistent basis.
Recruitment
Since the current hiring list is valid through October 2021, there was no official
recruitment drive in 2020. However, the Training Division watched multiple webinars
and virtual trainings to enhance the 2021 recruitment process. The objective of the
upcoming recruitment campaign is to appeal to quality applicants who are
representative of the City’s demographics. In addition to the Department’s social
media presence and website, it will continue to utilize PoliceApp.com for hiring
notification, candidate registration and candidate application submissions.
