With many hurdles due to the CV19 statewide restrictions, the Cranston Police K-9
unit would have to adapt and overcome. Our statewide training was also
discontinued, but as a unit we continued to train the safest way possible to keep up
with our standards of our training. During this time, we received numerous requests
from the schools and community to produce a K-9 video, resulting in the production of
the first CPD K-9-unit YouTube video.
The video led us to the first ever CPD K-9 unit virtual demo, which was sponsored by
CCAP, and its first ever virtual shop with a cop.
The CPD K-9 unit was able to get through these times, and eventually conducted our
first in-person demo with a boy scout troop, organized by Det. Iacone and K-9 Cali.
The unit completed 2020 with 10 tracks, 28 narcotic searches, and 10 building
searches assisting with our patrol units throughout the year. The unit also completed
16 area and article searches for evidence recovery.
The K-9 Unit has assisted with a total seizure of $142,000 in U.S currency for the
year. Fifteen total kilos of cocaine were seized traveling through the USPS.
