• In 2019 & 2020 the number of DWI arrests were on a downward decline. In
2021 & 2022 the issue of trying to incresae the number of DUI Patrols was a
goal and was achieved by:
o Making the DUI detail availble on holidays with a higher rate than
regular Blue Riptide Details. This additional funds is provided by the City
of Cranston.
o Making the DUI details simpler by allowing officers to double up to share
the workload that is often assoicated with making a DUI Arrest.
o Allowing officers to put in for a DUI detail with short notice instead of
limiting the availableity.
o Ability to use a DUI Only Cruiser provided by the State of Rhode Island
Department of Highway Safety.
• The number of Fatalities decreased by 7.
• Total number of crashes was relatively the same (decreased by 19) as 2021 but
was lower than Cranston’s average of 3000.
• The total number of injuries was relatively the same (decreased by 21) as 2021
but was lower than past years.
• The number of Hit & Run reports increased by 63 reports.
• The number of traffic stops continue to be looked at and compared to number
of accidents. There does not seem to be any corilation between the number of
traffic stops and number of accidents (See charts below). So just focusing on
increasing the number of traffic stops in an effort to reduce the number of
accidents does not seem like a complete solution. A comprehensive effort of
contiued Traffic stops, improve road designs along with community
outreadch/social media and Education is still probably the best chance at
reducing accidents in the City of Cranston.
