CASE ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW
For purposes of oversight regarding case assignment, monitoring, and review within
the Division; primary investigative assignments have been split into the three
investigative groups with one Sergeant assigned to each area of responsibility. The
three areas are currently comprised as follows:
Sergeant Michael Gates – 2 Shift Detectives

Sergeant Lori Sweeney – Special Victims Unit Detectives
The Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) is responsible for follow up investigations on all
crimes reported to Cranston Police that are not solved during the initial patrol
response, as well as any additional follow-up which is deemed necessary by the Patrol
Supervisors. Detectives in CIU are trained investigators who examine crimes that may
require specialized techniques, including forensic examination, surveillance, and the
cultivation of informants. Virtually any crime which requires follow-up investigation,
excluding those handled by the Special Victim’s Unit (cases of sexual misconduct or
those involving juvenile offenders) and the Special Investigative Unit (narcotics and
vice related crime), is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
The unit itself was responsible for 53 arrests based on follow up investigations.
Additional arrests made by the unit stemmed from on-scene warrantless arrests after
making contact with suspects in various situations. The unit also was responsible for
over thirty-eight arrest warrants, countless search warrants and acted as
