Note: The number of overall reported incidents is generally more significant than the
number of investigations carried out by the CIU. This is due to frivolous or unfounded
criminal complaints; determined by other divisions of the Cranston Police Department
before Detective assignment or determined after progressing to the CIU but before
assignment. However, it must be construed as an accurate depiction of an overall
crime comparison.
The Special Victims Unit (SVU) is under the leadership of Detective Sergeant Lori
Sweeney. It is responsible for the investigation of all offenses within the City of
Cranston that involve domestic violence, sexual crimes, child neglect/abuse, elderly
neglect/abuse, human trafficking, missing adults, runaways, and vandalisms. The
Unit is also responsible for the maintenance of the sexual offender registry. To meet
this mission, the SVU comprises four detectives, a civilian domestic violence
advocate/law enforcement liaison supervised by a detective sergeant. Additionally,
three detectives remain sworn members of the FBI, HIS, and SOLEMN federal task
forces, respectively. Detective Sergeant Sweeney was sworn in on July 8, 2015;
Detective Iacone was sworn in on May 15, 2015; and Detective Daniel Lee was sworn
in on March 26, 2018. The SVU detectives investigated forty-one incidents of criminal
sexual contact in 2022. This represents a slight downward trend in the overall
number of reported incidents of sexual crime.
