CASE ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW
For oversight purposes regarding case assignment, monitoring, and review within the
Division, primary investigative duties have been split between the Special Victims Unit
and the Criminal Investigations Unit. Sergeants Lori Sweeny and Mark Whitman are
responsible for the assignments to SVU and CUI, respectively, with administrative
oversight provided by Lieutenant Stephen Brooks.
The Criminal Investigations Unit (CIU) is responsible for follow-up investigations on all
crimes reported to Cranston Police that are not solved during the initial patrol
response and any additional follow-up deemed necessary by the Patrol Supervisors.
Detectives in CIU are trained investigators who examine crimes that may require
specialized techniques, including forensic examination, surveillance, and the
cultivation of informants. Virtually any crime which requires follow-up investigation,
excluding those handled by the Special Victim’s Unit (cases of sexual misconduct or
those involving juvenile offenders) and the Special Investigative Unit (narcotics and
vice-related crime), is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Unit.
The unit itself was responsible for 142 arrests based on follow-up investigations.
Additional arrests made by the unit stemmed from on-scene warrantless arrests after
contacting suspects in various situations. The unit was also responsible for sixty-four
arrest warrants and numerous search warrants and acted as complainants on other
warrants for other outside agencies who were executing the same within the
jurisdiction of the City of Cranston.
