One of the department’s most critical traffic enforcement initiatives is the reduction
and prevention of intoxicated motor vehicle operators. In 2019, the Cranston Police
arrested one hundred and nine people for operating under the influence of alcohol and
or drugs. Unfortunately, one of the statistics that did not decrease was arrests for
driving under the influence. In 2020, one hundred and twenty-six people were
arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. This was a fifteen
percent increase over 2019. At the end of 2020 and into 2021, the department began
to ramp up efforts to train more of our officers in the identification of impaired drivers.
